How to buy from Japanese Yahoo Auctions from abroad (using Buyee)

Most of the pieces on SUBMARKET are listed on Yahoo Auctions Japan, which only ships and accepts payment inside Japan. A proxy service bids, pays, receives the item at its Japanese warehouse, then forwards it to you. Buyee is the most common one; Neokyo and ZenMarket work the same way.

The flow, step by step

1. 01Create a free Buyee account (email and address). No purchase needed to browse.
2. 02From a SUBMARKET listing, press "Buy secondhand" — it takes you to that exact item on Buyee.
3. 03Place a bid, or use "Buy it now" if the listing has a fixed price. You pay the item price up front, at this stage.
4. 04If you win, Buyee buys the item and it ships to their Japanese warehouse. This is the first payment.
5. 05Once it arrives at the warehouse, you pay the second time: international shipping, chosen at that point by weight and method.
6. 06The package ships to you. Customs/duties, if any, are charged by your country on delivery.

What it actually costs

There are two payments, not one. Budget for both before you bid.

• ·Item price — what you bid or the fixed price.
• ·Purchase fee — a flat ¥500 per order (roughly $3), no matter how many items you win in that order.
• ·Guarantee plan — ¥0 to ¥500 depending on the plan; the default Standard Plan is ¥500.
• ·Domestic shipping — seller to Buyee warehouse, usually small.
• ·International shipping — the big variable. Depends on weight, size and method (EMS, DHL, sea, etc.), paid at the second stage.
• ·Duties / import tax — charged by your country, not Buyee. For the US, shipments under $800 are generally duty-free.

On every SUBMARKET listing, the "landed" figure adds the fixed fees plus an estimate of shipping. The proxy and guarantee fees are exact; shipping is an estimate until Buyee weighs the actual package.

Things worth knowing before you bid

• ·A bid is a commitment. Proxy services buy on your behalf; you cannot casually cancel after winning.
• ·Ask the seller questions before bidding, not after — through the proxy's Q&A. Measurements and extra tag photos matter most for archive pieces.
• ·Consolidate multiple wins into one international shipment to save on shipping.
• ·Auctions end at a fixed time (shown in JST on each SUBMARKET listing). Snipes happen in the final minute.

Why buy from Japan at all

For 90s–Y2K Japanese archive, the domestic secondhand market is deeper and often cheaper than US/EU resale, because supply is concentrated here. That price gap is the whole reason SUBMARKET points outward to these listings. The proxy fees are the cost of reaching that market — factor them in, and many pieces still land below what you would pay on Western resale platforms.
